Becoming a Student ... what
it means
The desire to learn and become part of another culture is the
single most important requirement. As a Project Canada participant, the
student will become a part of his or her host family. The student will
NOT be a guest, but rather a fully participating family member with chores
and rules. This exchange is usually a life changing experience which will
give you insight into how others live as well as give you the opportunity
to become fluent in the language of the country you are exchanging
to. Memories that will last a lifetime!
Selection of
the school
A semester or
school year in Canada offers not only a great education, but also an
experience of a lifetime. You’ll see firsthand the diversity of Canada
with its beautiful landscapes and national parks, lively, multicultural
cities and welcoming, friendly people.
Project
Canada will help you find an adequate school and program, the dates that
you want to start and the amount of time that you want to spend in Canada.
Unlike other exchange programs, Project Canada is more flexible with
dates. This depends on the student and the program he or she may choose.
Applying is easy.
Just complete the preliminary application form below and send it to us via
post or email. If we feel that Project Canada is right for you, we will
get in touch with you and send you our complete application packet.
Registration
Once we have
received your information, we can register you to a school, keeping your
preferences in mind which you have specified on your registration form.
High School
years in Canada are very different from schools in other countries. Your
school day usually ends at 3 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon. By the time
you get off the school bus it may very well be supper time. This means
that most of your time will be spend in the school and with your
classmates.
Many schools
offer extracurricular activities such as sports teams, academic clubs and
social dances helping you to make friends and connect with the culture.
You will be
placed with a Canadian family, which adds to the cultural experience. We
select families very carefully to meet the needs of the student. All
accepted host families will have been screened.
Canada is a
large, beautiful and diverse nation. In the Edmonton area, where Project
Canada is based, and most students are placed, a variety of activities can
be found. There are art galleries and music festivals, plays and stage
productions, the Space & Science Centre, the provincial museum, Fort
Edmonton Park, Alberta Aviation Museum, a zoo, movie theaters and the
world’s largest shopping mall.
Not far west
of Edmonton, in the Jasper area, there is skiing and sightseeing with the
majestic Rocky Mountains. To the east and south of Edmonton, Alberta's
famous prairie farmland can be seen.
Throughout
western Canada, western life and rodeos are celebrated events. Small towns
and large cities alike hold exhibitions that celebrate agriculture,
farmers, ranchers and cowboys and offer exciting rodeo and chuckwagon
racing action, as well as midways with thrilling rides.
Outdoor
activities are popular with Canadians year round, from horseback riding,
hiking and quadding in the summer to skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing
in the winter.
